We are delighted to share a new publication from the Intergenerational Exchange Programme (IGEP), published in the Oxford journal, Journal of Dialogue Studies, Intergenerational Dialogue for Well-Being Futures: Theories, Practices and Policy Pathways.
Drawing on our work with younger and older participants through IGEP, the article explores how facilitated intergenerational dialogue can create meaningful moments of connection, learning and exchange.
A key idea emerging from the research is the value of “joyful connection in the moment.” Intergenerational programmes are often assessed according to whether they create lasting relationships or longer-term behavioural change. Our research suggests that the moments themselves matter too. A positive conversation, a shared laugh, learning something from someone of another generation, or simply feeling heard can have value in its own right.
The article also reflects on the importance of reciprocity: rather than seeing one generation as helping another, IGEP creates spaces where participants can both contribute, learn and share their experiences.
The publication builds on our ongoing work at the University of Sussex and with our community partners to better understand how universities can create spaces for meaningful intergenerational exchange.
